what's the buzz

queen beeApril Buzz

Time goes by so fast. How many times have we said that in conversation? “I just spoke to those friends a few weeks ago” turns out it was six months ago.  “I just visited those relatives” and that was two years ago!  My son is now 25 and recently (probably a year ago) he said, “Mom, you’re right. Time does go by quickly.” Well, I always thought it was just something old people said, but now I’m saying it.  Once you’re out of school and on a ‘real life’ schedule, zippity do da, time flies. Lately I just want time to slow down as we launch into spring and all the holidays that follow. My daily routine just can’t handle the overload.

This past week I went through Passover, Easter and two charity auction events and I had to skip two events (this work thing can be a real buzz kill!). During all this celebrating I had to say good-bye to my nephew and his family who are moving to Chicago. Jill, Mike, Delaney and Jackson loaded up their cars last week and off they went, into the wild blue yonder.  The kids were so excited, “We’re going to Chicago!” was how they greeted me last week with happy smiles and laughter but obviously they don’t know what they’ll be missing - Regina’s knocks their pizza out of the ballpark, Chicagoans use funny colored green relish on their hot dogs, the Red Sox at least have won a World Series in our lifetime…and let’s not forget that crazy wind! I miss them already. Those kids are like my grandchildren. Their parents even let me feed them some occasional junk food and stay up late whenever my husband and I babysat. We loved spending time with them, and of course now with this Chicago thing it’s going to be a tough commute. I don’t think in six months I will be saying I just saw them last week, I bet I’ll know exactly how long it’s been. Maybe?

This week my daughter Erica, whose age I won’t disclose (no one would believe I have a daughter her age anyway) is moving into her very own place. The boomerang kid is moving to the PRC, Peoples Republic of Cambridge, where she will fit like a glove.  Erica moved back from San Francisco last fall and had a ‘temporary’ residence with her parents but this week she will officially be her own landlord, Hallelujah! She and Hugh are very excited and have already signed up for ‘farm shares’ and will be getting their fresh produce and fish every week… like I said, she’ll fit right in coming from California. We can go back to living on Milano cookies and Coca Cola and occasionally a little iceberg lettuce. I can go back to leaving her bedroom door open, which now looks like the day after the bridal sale at Filene’s Basement.  I can go back to working out on my elliptical in my underpants, not a pretty sight. Things will go back to normal here, whatever ‘normal’ is? The point being is that we knew all these things were coming, yet it’s all happening so fast, I want to stop time. I will remark at Delaney’s and Jackson’s graduations, “Hey you just moved to Chicago a few months ago, how did you grow up so fast?” Erica will be visiting us at our independent living complex and we’ll be talking about her move to Cambridge, “Wasn’t that only a year ago?” I’ll walk by a mirror and say to myself, “Who is that old person?” – can’t be me!

Erica, Hugh, Jill, Mike, Delaney and Jackson - I miss you MUCHO, already.

Buzz.
