Well, we just finished
with Father’s Day and the first day of summer is upon
us this week; after that long winter I bet we can hardly wait
to make it official. It all moves so quickly, and the 4th is
just around the corner…before you know it the summer
is over. I always felt like the 4th was the official start of
summer and we always celebrated by taking the boat down the
Charles and enjoying the Pops on a beautiful night. It was fun
for most of us although my husband always dreaded the drunken
yahoos going through the locks at midnight to get back to the
dock! I always found it astonishing how many people could
fit on some of those boats (and some of those floating tubs
that were passing as boats). My biggest dilemma one year was
that we only brought one bottle of chardonnay for THREE women
on board and now we were trapped for hours with no way of getting
any more chard on the Charles. My niece resorted to calling
out to neighboring boats to help us, less her aunt have a breakdown.
We survived that year and never made that mistake again and
enjoyed several more until we sold the boat. We now watch
the festivities from the banks and it sure is not the same,
so we will have to start a new tradition.
As I’ve said
in the past, time just moves way too fast. I’m going
to try and drag my feet more this summer and take it a little
slower, which I say every year but it never happens. My husband
doesn’t like to travel in the summer because the weather
is so nice here, why would you want to go anywhere? I
think this may be the first summer where we actually don’t
have to attend any weddings, usually at least three, so this
is going to free up some time. My best friend Donna is
retiring after teaching for 28 years, so maybe we can spend
some days at the beach, and not just one day like last year.
Today I am actually jealous of her being a teacher, I never
was before but the fact that she is retiring while she is still
able to chew her own food and walk on her own two feet is remarkable.
I will probably be working till one foot is halfway in the grave;
sorry for all those out there who thought it may be sooner! I’m
going to enjoy some time off this summer and I’m going
to be sure that my travel plans will not just be work related. I
think I may set a goal to explore different beaches in the area,
ones I’ve never been to in the past. If anyone needs some
help checking in at your beach or lake house, I could be available.
Oops, Labor Day is just around the corner.
P.S. Congrats Donna and a big shout-out to all teachers everywhere!!!
